Jayrees . . . well, it used to be that anything on the left meant "dominant" or "active" and anything on the right meant "submissive" or "passive," but I don't know if that code is universally followed any more.

So you didn't tell the piercer what to do--he just did what he liked? I guess that happens a lot now.
